So cheers to you, listener of the week. Jalen, and now it is time to listen to Amberlynn Oh My Girl, everyone, this is Amberlynn she is I swear you're like, you're like the mini version of me. Like how much younger Are you like 20 years younger than me?

03:58

I know. Oh no, we're not claiming that. And I refuse to believe that.

Shannon O'Brien  04:04

Seriously, I love watching you grow because you are so mature and so incredible and so sassy and so fun. And so incredibly professional. That first of all, I can't believe I haven't had you on the show sooner. I think you and I have been doing so many things behind the scenes we kind of forgot to include you in the sweet success because we're just so used to each other. But everyone this is Amberlynn she is a very dear friend of mine now and before it was just my colleague and now she is a very good friend of mine. So welcome to the show. Miss Amber.

04:40

Well, thank you for having me. I think this was definitely overdue. But we weren't we were hyper focused. We were focused on students and and you know getting them set into motion. So I mean, here we are now right?

Shannon O'Brien  04:55

They are never too late to talk about the success and and so much more. has happened since I met you since the lockdown since, you know, even just the last six months, so much has changed. So let's start for the audience who do not know you, which would shock me they don't know you. But let's start for those folks that don't necessarily know you. Who is Amber Lynn Do tell? Well,

05:19

I am a lash and brow specialist. And I'm very proud of that. But I am also very thankful to now be a part of the love to sugar team as an advanced figurine educator. So girl, it's been a whirlwind, to say the least, but I'm so full of love and gratitude. I mean, your community, your love to sugar community is just oh my god, phenomenal. They're just the best community.

Shannon O'Brien  05:48

Thank you. And you know, I can't really total I mean, I think I think it starts with those of us that are kind of always involved in there that were always positive and, like, show up with gratitude. But I haven't you been pleasantly surprised at like, there aren't any haters in there. There aren't, you know, there isn't anyone in there that's like, you know, there for bad reason, or to, you know, like Mean Girls Club. It's literally like the most amazing group of professionals who really do want to better themselves and others.

06:20

Well, and I really do think when when you get to a point into your career, where you are just solely focused on growing and elevating and supporting each other in the process and kind of holding each other's hands saying, Hey, I've been through this, you know, we help you and vice versa. I just, it's astonishing. And there's really no other way to put it. I love seeing them support each other and give tips and tricks. And we need that in our industry. We need more of that in our industry. Absolutely. And

Shannon O'Brien  06:53

yeah, whether you've been doing it for 20 years or 20 minutes, everyone's got something to contribute, which has been great. But let's start with you. Tell the world what was your very first job out of esthetics school?

07:05

Well, my, my very first job actually didn't last as long as only a few months. But I was quickly thrown into the spotlight, I had a job at a spa, very small cue, you know, very specialty type of Spa. But one of the things that I was grateful for was they gave me the opportunity to not only do hair removal, but nail care, so I actually got to get my feet wet. And I highly suggest that with students because you absolutely have to love what you do. And not to say I didn't love the Nokia part, but I knew for a fact hearing level was it right and, and that's when I really fell in love with it. Um, so I am grateful for that job, although it only lasts like three months, but oh yeah. And you have to find your home away from home. Okay, so never say no to opportunity or a job because you never know. And you're gonna learn a lot along the way. So,

Shannon O'Brien  07:59

okay, so you leave that little spot and where do you go? Oh, and

08:03

then you know, for the next couple years I managed a few high end spas the department I was in and I continue to perfect my skills but then I you know that I realized the spa life isn't for me. I'm not a big fan of spa music. I know that's an unpopular opinion here. But I quickly learned that I need to be true to myself and I do need to find my home away from home. And and then that's how you know laughs craft happened. And that's a that's a quirky funny story too as to how I started here. But then we joined together and I've been here ever since. So it's great.

Shannon O'Brien  08:43

And now you are the lash and brow crafter. I am I caught up with you as I was watching you put wax on videos and crafting those beautiful brows and kept saying, Amber, you need to learn to sugar. Oh, yeah, yeah. Okay.

09:03

Number three. Every time we've hung out every time we like run into each other, which I was so thankful to see you. Especially at the skin games and you know, other other shows. And every time over the years, you've told me, let's get you to sugar. Let's get you to sugar and I'm like, oh shit, I'm so booked. I don't have time. What time do I have? You know?

Shannon O'Brien  09:26

Oh, and then you were given a whole lot of time talk about

09:30

isn't that great? I mean, I'm telling you, it's an in many ways. There were a lot of silver linings during the pandemic, and that was one of them. It gave me time to actually learn a new tool and a new skill and now I'm hooked. I'm completely hooked and thankful, you know? Yeah,

Shannon O'Brien  09:51

it's fun. The lockdown when for those of you that weren't in the sugar world during lockdown. We had to get really creative really quickly. And we've always been an online person Graham, with ice university with the basic cert. But we had to really help the other sugar companies because the majority of them at the time were now they have videos, but majority of them at the time were all hands on. So it was really cool to watch our team come together and say, Hey, how can we help these folks, I was shut down in my house with my teenage boys and my dogs and you were sat down with your tiny little girl and various other folks were shut down with their families. And I jumped in my bathtub. And I said, Hey, I want to learn how to surf your legs while you're at home, jump in your bathtub with me. And we just started teaching people how to practice from home while they were doing the basic certification. And you were one of them Sugaring on the back of your hand, because you didn't have a model.

10:47

Oh, we got creative at home, let me tell you, but I think and I want to emphasize this so much for those listening in because it didn't matter how long I've had a business, it did not matter. You know how long we've successfully built businesses when that is taken away from you, even if it's temporarily, right. And here you have all this time and yes for staying home and staying safe and healthy. But how do you stay motivated? How do you keep any positive headspace right for us as dietitians? We were craving education. We were craving, you know, exploring having new tools under our belt, we kept our mindset so strong because we knew we were gonna go back. But we wanted to bring something with us and kind of re innovate, or places and one of the many things was Sugaring. And that was the first thing on my mind. Because I kept thinking about you every time you would say I want you to shutter. And I was just like, Okay, let's check out sugar aid, because that was the first thing on my list. And here you were helping these esthetician stay motivated during the most craziest time of our career, you know, and I'm like, Oh, my God, this is perfect. And of course, I went to work, I took the cert, started practicing on my hand trying to figure it all out. And I was grateful for that. And I had no idea I fell in love with sugar. But I was open minded. I decided you know what I've watched for a decade. It doesn't matter. Let's try new tool is trying new technique. And I was like, How did I not do this earlier?

Shannon O'Brien  12:29

Yeah. So do share. What do you think you're seeing is the biggest difference between stopping waxing and starting Sugaring? What are you seeing like in your clients and in your services that is has been the biggest difference?

12:43

Oh, there's quite a bit of differences. But I will say this because I was in a different position than your average tourist, right? Because here I already had a built in clientele, where they used to my bra skills. Absolutely. So the way I positioned sugar to them, is actually might not how you think and the sense of you know, because we know it's it's better, right? But I had I had to, I had to kind of position it in a different way. And so when I spoke with my clients, because obviously we know this, but to a client, I had to explain to them that it's not that one is necessarily better than the other, it all has to do with what we prefer, and what we believe in, right. And so explaining to my clients that I wanted an all natural alternative to wax. I wanted all natural, clean ingredients. I've even changed my pre and post and I wanted more beauty conscious services. And so at the end of the day, I had to explain to clients that hey, what we were doing before wasn't necessarily bad. But now that I found a better, more healthier way to remove your hair, let's go that route and and it was a no brainer. First of all, they trust me. So they didn't care. But they were like wow, I cannot believe you spent your time instead of stress now because you know your business is not doing so great. You decided to learn a whole new technique and tool and found healthier products for

Shannon O'Brien  14:18

us. You know, so it was it was a little different. You really have their back. Yeah, totally. And that's your job is to be the professional that finds the latest, greatest thing to do right? It is to bring

14:30

them the best. Yes. And I'll tell you this, because I spent we were off for a whole year. Can you believe that? I spent that whole entire year mastering the brow Sugaring techniques mastering both the finger and the spatula method going back and forth. You know it works fine in my flow. And I could not believe the results the retention of the brows lasted longer. Even you know because as we're Moulton and we're wrapping up sugar on the follicle. It's just sliding it right out effortlessly. I was blown away. I was totally blown away. So

Shannon O'Brien  15:09

retention is totally a last word. I love that you like have your last vocabulary and your sugar vocabulary.

15:18

Yeah, all right. I know it sounds crazy. But BookBrowse do have a type of retention, right? Because Because the goal of broad design is to get them to stay clean and smooth as long as possible. We're training them to stay in shape. So in reality, we're creating that retention. So yeah, that's totally last last word.

Shannon O'Brien  15:41

So I love it. I love it. So I remember distinctly, you were like, I'm going to be the best at brows, I am going to do my lashes my brows, I'm going to be the queen in my area. And you have achieved that for sure. You and I are both talking before the show started about how fascinating it's been that people just don't drop those services, even in tough times. And we're gonna have a podcast about slow seasons. But even in slow seasons, whether it's just a slower season of the year or a pandemic lockdown that we've never had before. People retain. There's that word, people keep those services that have actually kind of surprised us, like, their lashes are on point, even in lockdown. And they were begging us, begging us to come to their homes in lockdown. Do you remember that?

16:36

Well, you and I both know, because I remember you started your business during the recession. So don't think I forgot that part. Okay, so here's so here comes a shutdown, which to us is almost like a recession financially. Right? Because

Shannon O'Brien  16:52

what what do we do? still work at home?

16:56

We couldn't Yes, yeah. And it was, it was insane. It was insane the amount of clients that were requesting my services Briony because number one, this is what makes us feel good inside and out. This is not just a superficial beauty service, right. Just like with sugar inheritable. It's hygenic, it makes us feel you know, very feminine, very, you know, it makes us feel good. And when you take that away from women, oh, they're gonna do anything they want at all costs. That's why we were bribed to bring out. But it's true. And this is why we are technically recession proof in the sense that women will always want to feel good, even if that means removing hair, or in my sense, also applying extensions, because that's the one thing that they do for themselves. You know,

Shannon O'Brien  17:55

for sure, it's really been that bedrock that has kept the foundation of our business people might stop doing expensive facials, but they're always going to make sure their brows at gunpoint or they're going to make sure their bikini is smooth because it just makes them feel more normal. You know, absolutely nothing against facials love me good facial. But I think I was really seeing that as people were, especially in the first recession that I experienced people really kind of like you know, I can kind of go by without a facial it felt like a luxury where these felt like necessities and that was really key. And I want to jump in and point out that you started just Sugaring brows lashes you were like so about face. And then I said, Sister, you want to give yourself a raise. It's time to do bikinis. And you fought me for a little bit, but tell me how that's going. Yeah, and

18:48

when do I ever not fight you sometimes because I'm so stubborn. Sister. Oh, nobody can deny that first of all, but the reason why I was stubborn in the beginning, because I was thinking, oh my gosh, you know, it's insane. How am I going to do this? I'm so fully booked, how am I going to add a whole nother thing to my schedule. But you made me think he made me sit down and think okay, well, this means I'm cutting off. I mean, I should have cut off new clients long time ago in that capacity, but how do I give my clients more perks? How do I find more innovative, innovative ways to spoil them? And I started talking to my clients and I'm like, you know, how would you feel if I added on full body sugary treatments? You know, I we already teach about this blah, blah blah. But how would you feel if I gave you more perks and it was a no brainer because they trust me? You know, they were like I've been waiting for you to do this. And then in my mind, I'm like dammit, Shannon. I knew they're always right. I know. I know. So sure enough it did not take long at all or my especially my last time As they went back there, Phil, and then they're Brazilian Phil, Brazilian Phil persona and Phil for Zion brows, you know, whichever they

Shannon O'Brien  20:07

raise? Oh my god. Yeah,

20:11

you have no idea.

Shannon O'Brien  20:12

I do I do. And that's the beautiful part is, hey, you have this amazing clientele, even for those of you in the audience that only have half a clientele and you're trying to fill your books, work with the people that you have. And ask those people for referrals if you need to fill your books, but in your case, Amber, you really needed to say, okay, how can I max out this person without trying to sell them? Right? Because I think sometimes we feel like we need to say, oh, we should like this extra moisturizer. Oh, you really need this sunscreen. Oh, and then it feels salesy, right. But if you're like, sister, would you like to get your swagger back, chip up on my table? We're going to do your lashes. And then we're going to trigger your Brazilian and they're like, Oh, really, I don't know. Oh, and you just guide their little hand. You just put them on the table and you sugar their bikini, even if it's basic bikini, and you have them hooked and raise?

21:03

Absolutely. And I know we speak about that in the sugar tribe. advanced classes within the library, we do talk about how to not necessarily focus so much on the retail but how to kind of get them in to make sure that that is a part of their aftercare because it has to be a necessity. It can't just be Oh, hey, try this product. This is good for you. It's like, No, you need this. And this is why you need that. Right. So it's Yeah, yeah, Holly,

Shannon O'Brien  21:29

you want to get your swagger back? I got to, you know, and and it's just, it's different than, hey, let me tell you this thing, even though you're technically you know, running up the ticket a little bit, you know, right. I really love that you gave it a chance. I think some people at first are like, I don't know, I do faces I can't do Brazilian. So if you're that person listening to this show, Amber is standing suitesuccess testimony that, you know, it all just becomes body parts that you remove hair from, and it builds that ticket.

22:04

Well, and I like to look at it just like brows. I love a nice, clean, sleek brow. And the fact that I love to clean up, you know, and remove hair. It was like, wow, look at these results. So I looked for the instant gratification from Brazilians. So I'm like, wow, it's all nice and clean. Perfect. Yeah.

Shannon O'Brien  22:23

When they do that swag, or dance when they get off the table, and they're like, oh, my gosh, this feels amazing. Now you're like their hero. And here's the key to all of this. You are their partner's hero. Because yeah, you know, I gotta tell you, their partner is probably like, oh, yeah, their brows, their lashes look really great. But that bikini looks amazing. Oh,

22:48

it's so funny. I've had clients husband send me additional tips, like via, like via, you know, Venmo, PayPal, whatever they prefer. Yes. And I'm just laughing. And I have to text my client, like, Oh, this is so wild. Because I've never seen that side of them before, mind you. I've only done their face forever. And it's just, it's so it's so funny. It's just,

Shannon O'Brien  23:14

you know, I want to take a quick moment to really stop you and just soak up this minute. Because here we are on a sweet success podcast, celebrating you, and how far you have come and how much you have gone through. And you have really thought like, even in the pandemic, like, am I going to be able to still do this and raise my daughter, you know, am I going to have my clients come back. And I remember those fear filled moments for both of us. I remember, you know, when when life has hit us hard, and I just, we're in the middle of a podcast, I'm staring at your sweet face just so incredibly proud of you. And I think that we need sisters in this industry to remind each other of that

24:08

well and even during now because mind you COVID isn't necessarily over but we're still navigating. And we're still pivoting and we're still we're in a better place. So I don't ever want to not say that. But even with our personal lives, right I listened to your I think that was your kickoff episode.

Shannon O'Brien  24:28

And rewind this yes, yeah, have the sugar mama been?

24:32

Oh, you had me in tears because you know as much as as much as we're both very strong and independent. And we tend to I always say hyperfocus because we're so like focused right? But we focus so much on students and our clients and our business and everything in between and our our kids and but then personally, we've gone through some things and I I just I commend you for being vulnerable and raw and I think you A lot of estheticians needed to hear that episode. If you haven't you need to go and listen to that episode because I'm telling you I was in tears driving into work like, Oh my God, no, I can't this is so the fact that you have overcome so much. And and the reality is, is our shuddering business, it does not matter what we go through, we have built this. So strong, we have built this foundation so strong, and we can bounce back at any time doesn't matter what we go through. And I'm currently going through personal things. But you know, we have to overcome that we and the one thing that we can depend on, and something that no one can take away from us is our business bottom line, you know,

Shannon O'Brien  25:48

success, right? True, sweet success is really understanding that you have built something that supports you supports your family supports your dreams, and really, truly Sure, financial is key, right? We want to make sure we're smart and our business, but it's the success of like fulfilling your dream and having support you and being very wise and feeling very strong in it. And I think that is this episode for me with you is we're not even talking about the financial, which has definitely improved for you. Right. But we're talking about the soul peace, the fulfillment, that the dream fulfillment, the you know, the client fulfillment, you know, like you are, I'm sure having more incredible times with your clients, and you're, we're just different now. And I bet it's just, it's something to be praised. So,

26:44

you know, it's, it's interesting, because it doesn't matter how long I've been in this industry, it does not matter how long, or how many clients, honestly, this, the success comes with your passion. And it doesn't matter. I started out with a couple broke clients a day, but I kept on it, because I loved it. And you have to continue to keep on it. And I wake up with so much gratitude every day, because I'm like, Look at this, look at this, you

Shannon O'Brien  27:13

I mean, you know, like your certificates, you've been the courses you've so I know, love your purple walls, you really have just taken that to the next level, and then the next level, and it's shining through and I love that you're ready to pay it forward now and do education and get out of that treatment room a little bit. And you've brought you're announcing that you're bringing someone else on you because there's so many clients

27:41

well, and you also have to find the right artists because this is artistry. This is definitely an art. And you do have to find the right people with the right mindset to follow and to help and because, you know, I want to collab I don't, you know, competition is never in my vocabulary. I don't ever want to hear anybody say competition, first of all, but I'm more or less like I brought on an artist and it's more or less a collaboration. I want to see her when to you know, and I want to see her build her books and build her passion because number one, we have to love what we do every day. Ya know? And I just I love seeing our fellow estheticians when I mean let me we can't keep all this information to ourselves. It's like all of the year. It's like why not help them educate? You know, not save somebody a headache.

Shannon O'Brien  28:35

Oh, girl. Okay, so if we are to wrap this up, I would love you to speak to that esthetician that is maybe not feeling quite so strong. And maybe she's sitting by herself listening to this podcast in her car or walking her dog or even sitting in her treatment room by herself and she's just not sure if she can do it. You know what is put a little amber in her ears be great to her Amber. Well, if

29:03

you are struggling right now and you're just starting because we all had to start somewhere. We all started from the bottom No, but he had a built in clientele. Nobody had a built in business. So let me just say this. Remind yourself of why you're doing this and remind yourself of why you love it. Remind yourself why you're sitting in your treatment room, building your business why you are advertising on socials why you're, you're so passionate about what you do, but you need to keep that reminder and you need to stay in your happy place because that's how you're going to create that success. The money will come the money will totally come and as long as you do your part and stick to your values and perfect your craft never stop learning. Keep you know if you have time and your treatment room and you don't have a client look for classes. Look for the next episode of The Sugar Show. If you really want to specialize in sugary and you have to do your part. But utilize that time and keep going. Seriously, keep going. Because it's not going to be like this forever, and you're gonna look back like I did. And you're gonna laugh because you're gonna be like, Wow, remember?

Shannon O'Brien  30:15

Yeah, yeah.

30:18

And the beauty of it all is we have social media these days. It's, I mean, you and I both started when we were putting flyers on cars, we didn't even have like Bucky and Vic, you know,

Shannon O'Brien  30:29

I used to mail out Vistaprint postcards, and I'd wait for the super sale where they were like 10 bucks for 100 or something. And I would hand address these postcards and stamps and the whole thing and mail them to my clients hoping for their fall facial. It's so different now. And you know, I will add to that and say, if you are in your treatment room, and you're by yourself on this journey, is to stop that because you have sisters now and brothers in the sugar tribe. And we are here for you, Amber, if you would never have walked up to me at that show and said, Hi, I'm ever like, you know, we would never have necessarily been friends, you know, you have to be you have to step out of your comfort zone, even if you're an introvert and connect yourself with some of the folks in our group, because they're amazing humans, and they've been there done that and we've cried on each other's shoulders, we've asked about product help. We've asked how to get unstuck. We've done all these things together. And so reach out and engage in the group don't just hover and listen to other people or read other people's questions, you know, really engage in the group and you will find your SD bestie too. So Amber girl, it is always amazing to have you in my world and in you've been in the shop training my girls on Browse. Oh, yeah, locked down. My girls learned so much. And you have classes inside the Knowledge Library on Browse. So if you are wondering if that sugar tribe is for you, audience Amber's got her classes inside of there, and you'll be seeing her live very, very soon. So, girl, as always, it is my sweet pleasure to visit with you.

Well, and thank you so much for having me on here. I you know, sometimes it's hard, because I will say this because I know we're you know, but it's really hard when you sit back and you talk about yourself, right? Because, you know, as an artist, we're, we're just in it. And I sit back and think about Wow, look at all this that we've actually done not only together but just I mean, we just keep climbing Yeah, and I love watching your success. And it just and I we all just need to celebrate each other's success. And that's what the love to sugar group is about. It's about not only celebrating but helping each other. And just being there. You know, it just I love it. I'm so thankful to be a part of this community.
