INTRO: Welcome to The Sugar Show. So if you're a cosmetologist or esthetician or wax professional, who's looking to fill your books, make more money in your business and enjoy greater balance between your work and home life. You are in the right place. Let's dive in.

Shannon O'Brien  01:11

Welcome to this episode of The Sugar Show we are going to get colorful in this episode with Chrissy Poroshenko. She is the Director of Education and the lead trainer for CB O N Group of Companies. They are a distributor in Northern America for effective cil. I've been saying reflective sale for a lot of years and I didn't realize there wasn't an element and I actually had to look back at the box. So reflect a sill I have been using for shoot 20 years to tint brows in Nevada I started learning how to do it and then I came to California and thankfully there is an FDA compliant product line that they have called intense Browns that we're able to use in California. And so I felt like it was appropriate to bring her on because I am always trying to find different ways that you all can have add ons for your services with sugar. So if you are doing brows anywhere on the face, even if you're doing a bikini and you ask someone if they want you to tint their brows real quick. It's a great addition and now there is a vegan plant based alternative and it is intense Browns from reflect to sell. So we are very pleased to have Chrissy their lead educator on the podcast today. And I look forward to having you meet her and learn all about her journey with the company. Oh Chrissy, I love that we are finally getting a chance to not be at a trade show not be running around doing all the education that we do. And we can solely focus on all things. Tint. I love this.

02:56

This is great. Yeah, thank you. I'm excited and said it's nice just to sit down and have a little chat.

Shannon O'Brien  03:02

Right, right. Just hanging out with us sugar mama. It's all good. So girl, chat with our audience with me about how you started. Because I think it's fascinating for estheticians cosmetologists, when they're trying to figure out what they want to do when they grow up. You know, and they're in school, or maybe they've been doing this for a while and they might think they want to do education. What is what is your history? And then we'll get on with the 10 stuff. But what is your history?

03:32

So that's a good, good question. So basically, I started off with, you know, I graduated from college as an esthetician, I started to work a little bit with it in the field, and then a little sidebar, I got really sick. And then I needed a break with hands on. And this company brought me in because I knew the CEOs daughter, and then we're looking for an esthetician to come in, but to also help with sales on products, understanding how to use products itself. So I came in and I started being an assistant to somebody, and then that assistant started to become okay, she's really good at her knowledge. Let's see how we can help her to help our departments with education. And then I started to help first with infection control education. So I actually have an infection control specialist. And then after that, yeah, so then after that, and they're like, Okay, we need to grow our tent or lash and brow category. And she's great. And she with the infection control, she was able to go into schools, she was able to go to colleges, she made that connection with schools, and she was able to teach so how can we bring that now to the the lash and brow styling so that's when they transferred they said would you like to be our lead trainer? So I said sure. And then I went to doing that sorry to educate and they're like, Okay, wow, she can organize classes really nicely. She can put together a team of trainers really nicely. She okay, you're going to become our director of education when it comes to reflect a skill and deal with Schools, coordinate, train trainers and so forth. And I've learned that I do have a great passion for teaching. Like, I never realized that before, when I was in the field of hands on, and doing the services. And now teaching, I'm like, it's real passion. I enjoy helping other professionals love what they do, expand what they can do in the beauty industry, and so forth. So that's how my story went along.

Shannon O'Brien  05:25

I just want to stop for a minute, and give some kudos to you. Because you are a badass baby. And I love that about you. Because you really, like stopped when your body said, I can't be in the treatment room. And you figured out a way to continue in this industry. And congrats to you, girl.

05:46

Thank you. Yeah, I never wanted to get out of the industry, right? It's a medic is nice. But you know, if you can't do the one part, what else? Can you help you have the knowledge? What can you do with it? Right? Read

Shannon O'Brien  05:57

the passion. I love it. You're such a great example. I love it. Tell me how, how much of the year do you travel to trade shows to educate like how much traveling is involved with your job.

06:08

So prior when I first just started to to educate and stuff was very locally. And then we realized how many trade shows the US does. Way too many. In Canada, there's probably two and the US is probably like 15. So at first, it just started locally, you know, you drive, you know, across Canada, because I'm Canadian, right. And then it started to be that the distributors were getting well known about reflected on the UI. So they want to class, they would fly me in to do a little bit of hosting classes. As a lead trainer now with the trade shows, oh, man, I think even this year, I think I've flown out maybe 15 times. So it's a lot. It's just a lot. But it is a it's rewarding as well, because people who have seen me on like the webinars because I do most like global webinars, they come to the trade show, they get to see me in person. So at first, it was very overwhelming, like people want to see me Whoa, sweet. And now it's like I built this little family community of, you know, our professionals and get to see them at the trade shows get to consult with them get to help them expand as well, like if they're having issues. So I do travel quite a bit. Now, like I said, like maybe I know, next year, even more shows are going to be available because the pen pandemic we know a lot of shows that it pick up this year, going back next year, a lot more. So we'll be pretty busy.

Shannon O'Brien  07:31

I love it. I love it. And that's actually how I met you was at the San Jose show. And I have to tell you, I just the moment I met you, I was like this girl loves to teach like I mean, you are teaching me about things that I have been using this product. Well, I've been using the original line of effects itself for 20 years now. And I actually have to admit to the audience, I have been calling it reflect a SIL literally for 20 years. I don't and you corrected me and I had no idea was even saying it wrong. Yeah. She said how did you get an L? How does it reflect yourself? It's like a US thing, right? Because

08:09

the US thing we noticed a lot I guess because in the mentality there like you're looking at your reflection because you're beautiful with your brows. And so you're not the first one I just get go now when I hear it because it's because

Shannon O'Brien  08:21

I am this many years old when I figured out Oh yeah, it's reflect to sell, not reflect to sell. And I was just giggling at myself. I'm like, where did I even put an L in there I had no clue must have been in school I'm going to play you gave me an

08:34

idea. I better do a little video about it ever real because you know how I was this old when I figured I'm just give me an idea for

Shannon O'Brien  08:42

anytime I can be of help. Great. So that segues right into reflect the sale as a company because I have been using it for the last 20 plus years. I'm trying not to date myself. But I've been using it for a long time. And then we couldn't use it for a long time because I was I was I got my aesthetic license in Nevada. And I was we are able to tip there. We were not when I moved to California and got reciprocity here. And there's other states that are able to and some aren't in all of that. But let's talk about reflect to sell as a company that you did not just start 20 years ago, this company has been around for a long time and a staple in our industry. So give us a quick overview of reflective so because I don't think I've ever thought about the history of it. And it's kind of fascinating. Yeah,

09:28

it is because it was it for me fascinating to have how they started off because as they started off in 1930 as a hair like the owner was a hairstylist and wanted to make great quality products for his customers for their hair. And that's how he came out with dyes for the hair. Then he thought to himself, how am I going to be able to I want to give great quality as well for working on the brows and the lashes like let me expand on let me grow and not just deal with the hair. And then that's when he 1950 reflect a silhouette was born. So we see that Rebecca cell has been around for over 90 years. And it's used by professionals across 65 countries. And it's so it's very well known and just like you, we people, we have people reaching the tradeshow saying, you know, we've been using this brand for that, you know, 15 years, 20 years, 25 years. And I think for me, that gives me even more assurance that this is a company that I do love or presenting because of that quality that it's it's lasted all these years with great support. Great feedback, great quality, I

Shannon O'Brien  10:34

guess. Yeah. Oh, yeah. It's an industry standard. It's

10:36

yeah. Market Leader, market leader and lash and brow styling. So that's a great thing.

Shannon O'Brien  10:42

Yeah. And gosh, lashes and brows styling. Like when I was starting in school, like you just wax some brows and throw on some tint. Like, you know, that was a long time ago. And now we have brown elimination, and lash curling and there's so much to know, right? So you graduated kind of from the tents and added on elimination of class and elimination and then also lifts right? Yeah, and then then, thankfully, well, what else? What am I missing?

11:16

So yeah, you did the the lifts the lash lifts the lash curls was like a little different. So that your brow lamination? Yeah, thank you got it all. Yeah,

Shannon O'Brien  11:24

it's insane how brows have become its its own niche. Like, really, truly, it's not just, you know, clean them up and throw some 10 times. I mean, it's there's truly styled, you're right. They're totally styled.

11:37

It's what frames are faced, right, a phrase their faces, what we looked at when we see emotions and so forth. And I, I always tell people when I train as look how much more interest in brows are right now and how many brow bars have opened up because during the pandemic and we're wearing masks, you know, people who didn't take care of their eyes, their lashes their brows realized, man, I need to I'm covering. Right, yeah, you're covering this part that shows the motion that kind of put you together as well. But now it's just you're seeing the brows and eyes and a lot of salons gained new customers that didn't even bother to do this and saw the importance of framing your your your face with your lashes and brows. So bras are a big deal. Big deal.

Shannon O'Brien  12:20

Oh my gosh, like, like exploded? I mean, who would have thunk that a pandemic would have a benefit to the brow industry?

12:27

Right? It would have been there was a benefit to the mask, right?

Shannon O'Brien  12:31

Maybe there was one or two benefits. Okay, so let's, I am so thankful I am in California. And I am so thankful that they came out with you know, we have not been able to tint for eons. And that was because there was not a product that had that was approved by the FDA. So talk about how intense Browns came about.

12:58

Perfect. Yeah. So the just the terminology too, we say compliant because the FDA doesn't approve a product. But you're you become compliant to their guidelines with the ingredients that they wanted us to change. So we are compliant. The first one, it was a process that took since 2015. So basically, we had this system intense brands with another name. And in Canada, it was doing well because we didn't have these restrictions. But we knew that in the US we couldn't sell it because the color additive, which is what's going to develop the color. It wasn't FDA compliant as a color additive. So they worked on since 2015. It's a long time, it's a lot of money, a lot of testing, you know, formulation changes. Sometimes I wish I could be a chemist and see what they know what they do. But they did all this and then they finally got it FDA compliant. And the great thing too is in January of 2022 this year, that's when California was allowed to actually offer these like lash tinting services brow laminations lash lifts. So now it's like okay, great January hit and we're like, okay, it's great that you do these services, but still, when they're tinting, where is that FDA compliant, they could still get fined, but they're using a product that's not compliant. So when they came out with this, we're like, Hey, big PR campaign, great thing to get out there and, and the Californians if you want to call that they're all so happy now the professionals that they have something that they could use more safely, effectively. Without, you know, because they couldn't even write tinting. on their menu. That word tinting because there was no Oh, I

Shannon O'Brien  14:39

know, we lived it.

14:42

It's like it was challenging.

Shannon O'Brien  14:43

Yeah, it's been a thing in our shop. And what's interesting is there was a lot of people that I said, Oh, we can finally tint in California. And I have quite a few clients that were like, Oh, well, my girl has been tinting. Oh my gosh. It's about education people. Yeah. So what What is the ingredient difference that is making the intense brown compliant.

15:06

So it was always silver nitrate, but the percentage of it or you know, wasn't according to, to the FDA compliancy. So they fixed that formulation, whatever they had to adjust. We can't know it fully, because it's confidential part of it. But it's a silver nitrate. It's a silver nitrate, yes, it's a silver nitrate ingredient. So now it's we're able to put it back on the shelf, right? This system with the intense browns and we just changed, we spruced it up to buy used to be called sensitive before, because it was great for people who might be sensitive to the original line, which is the oxidative and now we call it intense brands, because it's actually giving people the powdered makeup effect look, because we know how big that is with Microblading and so forth. But we

Shannon O'Brien  15:53

love it in the shop. My clients absolutely love it. And that's why I brought you on the show, besides the fact that I think you're amazing. That's audience why I brought her on the show, because we're always looking to find those tools that we can have as add ons to our sugar practice, or our aesthetic practice skincare in general. Right. So those folks that care about the skin that are amazing estheticians they switch over to sugar, and they're like, This is amazing. I love the results. I mean, our business is 98% Sugaring. Oh yeah. And so if I have this captive audience of hair removal clientele, what else can I do? Because my books are filled. What else can I do to boost my income? Exactly. Enter the ability to tint hint. And yes, and so now in California, I mean, this add on is a must have. And it's interesting. So we are putting your advanced your class on how to use the intense Browns inside our sugar tribe library. And we are adding on how to sugar with intense Browns whether because it's different steps than when I learned with the oxidative line. So if you are someone who has been using in another state, the oxidative line and you're looking to use intense browns, it's definitely different procedure. I actually love it. I think the results are gorgeous. And but it's definitely different. I had to reteach myself and my staff first.

17:25

Yeah. And it's easy. I would say, Okay, you learn you have to learn how to break them up. But if your sugar is and you're shaping those brows, that's something that comes as well part of your skills, because of the staining effect of the of the color, additive and so forth. But what I was going to mention is there's no mixing, you know, when you were doing the Aux data, that's the most questions. troubleshoot is like Well, I'm not getting the ratios, right. You know, what is your equal parts? How much of this how much of that. So the great thing about the intense Browns is just three different steps. Individual no mixing, right. But like you mentioned, it's a great add on service, great revenue, great profitability, but for your sugar rest, right? You know, you're out there doing even if you're not doing a facial accent when you're doing a facial waxing, it's great to tell your customer we're here we're styling your brows. Let's give you the complete Roush let's bump it up. Right, exactly, absolutely. I can come together with anything you're doing a a leg waxing during your Brazilian Oh, how about let's you're here, let's put some tint on and get that done with your brows as well. So they're great, easy quick as well. Add on certain Yeah,

Shannon O'Brien  18:36

you can be processing their their lash 10 or their brow tint. While you're doing a bikini sugar. Exactly. You can say hey, let's pop this on your brows, we did your brows last time you were here. I'll clean up a little bit. Let's just tint them real quick and then we'll let it process while I'm doing your beginning piece cake. Totally great add on beautiful product beautiful results and now they don't have to go somewhere else to get the job done.

19:03

That's a big thing like that customer loyalty. I always say if you're able to offer this service they're gonna come to you for it all right, so might as well give that to them and it's not that big skill like I said it's not a big skill to learn how to do it it's a quick service to do it they walk out right away with the results right so I'm once again it brings great revenue for you for your for your business.

Shannon O'Brien  19:27

Oh absolutely. And then the other things that you have as well like let's let's finish talking about the brows. So we talked about when you would sugar in the protocol. So with intense browns, share with everyone your thoughts on when you would sugar and we're going to actually have that as part of the class so the sugar tribes so

19:48

because that is a good question. We get asked that a lot as well. So basically you would do your your designing first not your design your your teaching first. Because if you were to say sugar before you are opening up like that follicle or that pour from pulling out the, the the hair. So you can with if you place after a tint, you could create some kind of sensitive reaction. So we always say do the shaping at the end. And then also when you've colored it when you put that tint on when you've stained, you can shave the brow even better because you can see the full scope of the brow, you know, you might be working on somebody who's very blond hair, so if you're gonna go wax, you might not be able to see the shape properly with the full scope of the brow. So coloring it first is actually going to aid you at the end to shake the brow even better when you're Sugaring. So always be remind remind it's a I guess you can say it's a second last step if you're going to apply an aftercare item. Absolutely right your your your your Sugaring will be the second last one, you'll have your aftercare.

Shannon O'Brien  20:50

Yeah, yeah, what you're doing is you really are putting the color on all of the berry baby hairs. So the regular brown hairs, the vellus hairs, all the little hairs that are in that area, then you can see what you have to work with. Exactly a lot of times people that are doing brows for the first time, they don't realize that there's a lot of like even little baby blondies that are growing in that you content to use to fill that brow up. Exactly. And you shape around that and you have a beautiful finish. Yeah,

21:22

exactly. Yeah. And the great thing about this to this the intense Browns is when it's actually staining so if you have a lot of customers that, you know, they wish they could have fuller brows or they've expressed to you you know, there's not really much you can sugar but then you're like okay, we can't sugar your brows, but hey, how about we tint them because you're, you know, we can stain them, we can make them look fuller, we can make them look thicker. So that's even a great speech to have for those who might not want a Sugaring on their brows. But now you're able to add this service to accommodate give them a nice look.

Shannon O'Brien  21:54

Yeah, if all kinds of tools Yeah, to work with them. Yeah. And then obviously there are some states that allow the ability to do the lamination and then also the lift and the curl so great, other great add ons that

22:10

other add ons. Yeah. Mostly you're you're focusing on brows, it's a great thing brow lamination is once again you're able to along with the intense Browns given the final complete with the Sugaring the final complete brow experience of a fuller looking brow.

Shannon O'Brien  22:27

I do love how much control you have to because I feel like the intense Browns it's very precise. Everything is very easy to control. And you really know where you're putting that product on and then you can sugar very precisely. I think sometimes people that wax think like oh well you can't get as precise a line with sugar. And those of us that know how to do Sugaring right? Know that we can get just as precise a line and we don't cause an irritation so you can really get up and do that perfect line whether with your finger or even with a spatula and get that perfect line so you've tinted those hairs and you can get right in there with precision. Yeah. And and not causing irritation and I love that that product line. Really makes sure that you know you are going to provide a great result and not causing irritation to the skin so

23:19

exactly and it is an if we mentioned this before but it is a vegan product. So it's all plant based extracts as well the all the color gels, the primer or plant based extracts so you know if somebody is is an organic small you know you're using Sugaring which is natural. Now you got a printing system that can be along with that theme of having natural stuff

Shannon O'Brien  23:40

so yeah, absolutely. I mean if you're Sugaring and it's all natural, we might as well be using products that are all natural on the bras. I love it.

23:47

Great porridge. That's the word a great word. Yeah,

Shannon O'Brien  23:51

great marriage. I love it. I love it. And then there is a product that goes on at the end. I think it's a sealer. Yes.

23:59

As the styling gel so with anything that we do. Even when Sugaring you know you apply afterwards a nice lotion or a nice aftercare oil or something like that, you know to provide that care of what you just did the treatment. So with the intense brows, you want to be able to just hydrate a little bit just to upset that brow into place and also to give it a gloss and the color like to make sure the color binds and stays and that becomes also a retail item. It is a professional use like item but it could also be a retail item.

Shannon O'Brien  24:35

Because we don't think to hydrate the brow area.

24:37

We don't we don't Sally and this product is such a hero product because when you think of hydrating the brows or your lashes you don't eat don't just think it's an after service. You know I'm a beach girl. I love being in the summer out in the sun. I love being in the water so forth. I want to protect my lashes and brows from the sun if I'm out there long so this product can be like a sunscreen for your As for your lashes, and brows and to hydrate them, right? So it's important to understand that I always give the analogy of when you go to the hair salon, you know, they don't just shampoo your hair after a treatment, they condition it as well. Or they might have to put a little oil at the end. That's how I say we did a treatment, we want to be able after to to condition it and hydrate it, and then send off your customer. So another

Shannon O'Brien  25:25

little transparent moment for me. Actually, you probably don't remember this. But how when I met you, you didn't know who I was. And I walked out because I needed the kit, right? So walk up to you. And you're like, Well, you have the styling gel, right? No, I've never looked like me. I've never even heard of that. Right? I said, No. And she's like, Are you kidding? Like, you should be doing this after every tent. And I literally, I sat there and I was like, I have been tinting for years. And I had no clue that you needed a study. And it's like the lights went on. I'm like, That makes all kinds of sense. And that's when I turned to you and said, Chrissy we need to talk about education, because clearly, the person that was teaching 20 years ago to me and my school did not educate me properly. So let's educate the masses. And you were like, done. Let's do it. Do this styling gel.

26:26

And that's why I call it a hero product.

Shannon O'Brien  26:28

Yeah, yeah. And is there is there SPF in it?

26:32

No, there isn't. But it's got the it's got a lot of mineral oils and Okay, our oils, mineral plants and so forth that helped just to condition so that when the sun you're beaming in the sun so much, you're having that protection, but I say my wording I treat it like an SPF for my lashes and my brows.

Shannon O'Brien  26:52

Okay, I do love we don't really think about keeping our brows hydrated. And I know that there's many times we're all go to, you know, trim up someone's eyebrows, and they're so brittle. Okay, and they break easily, you know, it's hair. Yeah, if they're dry and brittle, of course, they're gonna break. So if we can hydrate those brows, you know, and even the lashes to keep them just hydrated and healthy. I never even dawned on me to do that. So thank you for

27:25

welcome. I just have to say you caught you express how I talk so well, about the styling job. So funny that you remembered how I said it. Oh,

Shannon O'Brien  27:35

I love it. So funny. You know what, Christy? We're always students, right? Like, we're always slow, you didn't know as much about sugar. I didn't know as much about like, the actual words, shoot, I was putting an L in the company. But I think that if we stay students, and we're constantly learning, you know, like, I loved that I didn't know everything. And this girl just told me the way it was. And that's the way we learn. And that's the way our we're going to benefit our customers, we will

28:03

know everything we know we're gonna learn something, you know, brands change, trends change, or, you know, ingredients change or this and that we're all in our field. We're constantly learning. It's a great thing, I think to learn. Absolutely. Learning. Yeah,

Shannon O'Brien  28:17

absolutely. So if you can offer Sugaring to your clients, that's all natural. And you can be putting a tint on that you can educate your clients and say, Oh, this is plant based, it's vegan, it's super healthy for you, you know, it's going to it's going to finish that brow, and we're going to put the styling gel on it, it's going to keep your brows hydrated. I mean, I don't know that people have ever felt like this magical, like, mystical brow service that you could actually provide at your shop. And it will create that need, instead of oh, I should probably just get my brows done. You know, it's like we could do this. Yeah, I need Shannon to work on my brows because they are looking pretty sad, you know. And so it's really nice to have those tools at our fingertips to really create a beautiful end result. So let's finish this up by letting everyone know it's such a big company, you're in all of these different countries. How do you sell your products like there's there's I know but let everybody know kind of how it works with respect to sell as it relates to like the US and Canada for example.

So for for, for say any of the listeners and so forth, they would like to purchase it you need to know where to purchase, they can reach out to us at education at CBO N CB o n group.com. So when they reach out there, we can tell them where if they're from California we can Give them a couple of distributors. But also if they want to learn a little bit more educational, we talked about intense brands. And now they're like, you're gonna see also the I guess you said, the video, the tutorial and so forth. Anything more than you didn't need to download any profitability sheets on intense grounds to see, you know, any consent form because we're big on consent forms English or grain, you know, they can go on educate a reflective self education.com, the website, and they have that access as well.

So yeah, so inside the sugar tribe advanced knowledge library, you are going to have a class on how to do the intense brows and also how to sugar after you have tinted the brows. So feel free to look for that. It's just handy inside the app. And it's just, it's just nice to partner with folks like yourself that understand education, and how to properly perform a service.
