Shannon O'Brien  01:12

Hello, and welcome to this throwback episode of The Sugar Show. I am Shannon you sugar mama. And it is the holiday season. And we have so many clients that come in, worked up and running from thing to thing and trying to get all the perfect presents and the pies baked and the house cleaned and the family invited and all of the things our clients come into us and they are just stressed. And really we need some techniques on how to keep them from being so jittery it will help with calming their nervous system to get there kind of their brain in the right place for getting triggered and to really appreciate and enjoy the service that you're providing for them. So I thought I would throw it back today to an episode we did it was episode 15 With gainer farmer Chaotix. She is one of those people that when I see her at a trade show or a beauty event that I just My heart just melts because she is just a special special woman and a really a gift to our industry. And so this episode is a throwback to gainer when we did this back in the day. But it's it just is timeless to really help you to get some ideas on how to work with your jittery holiday clients. And we also have a class inside the sugar tribe inside the app that is going to help you with exact techniques on how to kind of calm your clients down just maybe something new, maybe you've been doing this a really long time and you want to learn something new. So this is a throwback for the holiday season. We will be back next Sunday with an all new Live episode. But I wanted to throw it back because these all these are goodies and this is a really great episode that I wanted to make sure that I bumped up to the forefront. So enjoy and I heard Pope you learn so much from this beautiful soul. I asked her to come to us today because I get a lot of questions about how to handle clients who come in the treatment room either nervous or jittery, or stressed or all of the above. And gainer and I had a great conversation about how facial massage and massage techniques can be used to take your business to the next level and really set yourself apart so you're not just churning and burning out, you know, sugar after sugar after sugar or facial after facial after facial but you really have set yourself apart by using techniques that can really be about your client. And about really getting them to relax, not be so jumpy and jittery. And really enjoy their experience. So Gaynor this show is gonna be a good one. I'm really excited. You're here.

04:01

Thank you very much. I'm very excited to be here too.

Shannon O'Brien  04:05

I love your accent. Where are you from? Well,

04:07

I am from England. And what my husband always says when people meet me is like No, she doesn't know the queen. And no, she's not from London, because people go oh, England. Oh, well back to London and I'm not from London. I'm in my hometown is called Birmingham. I know in America, it'd be pronounced Birmingham, but we call it Birmingham. So that's where I'm from originally.

Shannon O'Brien  04:33

Okay, so when I go there I won't sound silly if I say it wrong. I'll say it right now. So let's just let's just talk about your background really quick and how you came here and how you got into facial massage and aesthetics. Let us give us the quick and dirty on gainer. All right.

04:50

Well, I often say that I accidentally came into the industry because my original thoughts my desire When I was 14, I wrote to the BBC and asked them how I could become a makeup artist for them. They told me that they had a very strict procedure. And they told me that I needed to get a three year hair and beauty therapy certificate.

Shannon O'Brien  05:19

So that's what I did three years. Yeah.

05:24

Yeah, three years full time. So yeah, 1000s of hours of training. Then when I did actually go an interview for them, after obtaining my qualification, I was I failed the interview miserably. So I'm like, Okay, I plan to so then I'm like, Well, I didn't really like doing hair anyway. But I learned lots of things. And I love touching clients and people and the whole touch thing. And so I decided to start my own business, going to people's houses, and doing all the different treatments that I had learned. So say the difference in England, I'm called a beauty therapist. Okay, so that includes all the treatments on the face all the treatments of the body, including manicures, pedicures, electrolysis, body massage, you know, the whole thing. So that's why it's longer training there. And yeah, one of my very first, my, was my first job, actually, I was a Saturday girl shampooing, in a hairdressers, that's what we were called the girl. The clients used to say, Oh, you've got a great touch, Oh, I love the way you, you know, shampoo my scalp. And I'm not really I didn't know. But it was obviously something that I had, that people really like my touch. And then over the years, you know, I just did more massage, learn different techniques. And it kind of, you know, has evolved from there where I love to teach, I love to do massage. I love this industry. So it's just great that I can combine everything together.

Shannon O'Brien  07:14

Love that the Saturday girl, I'm gonna make you a t shirt. Okay, so let's fast forward to. Because we really want to get the mean, we got busy people listening to The Sugar Show. So I really want to get your knowledge just put out there about massage and why it's so important to learn proper technique for facial massage.

07:41

Yeah, well, there are so many different techniques that we can do. I think one of the main things is realizing that there are more than one technique that's going to serve different skin types and different clients. So most of us learned a European Swedish style of massage at school. And that's great. That's a beginning point to start from. But if we think about that, that's quite a stimulating kind of treatment and massage technique, it stimulates blood flow. And when you stimulate that blood flow, you're also stimulating the sebaceous glands. So if you've got an inflamed acne condition, and you only know one massage technique, it's not going to be the most effective and most suitable for your client. So learning like lymphatic drainage massage, or facial acupressure, that can relax and not stimulate the skin is going to be a lot more beneficial. Because I often say to esthetician, you know, do you use the same products on everybody's skin? And they say, Well, of course not. And so I'm like, Well, why would you use the same massage technique, when you know, it's not indicated for that client skin. So it is important to learn anatomy and physiology. And I know a lot of people don't like that. But if you're really going to master your craft, you have to understand more about how the body, the skin, the muscles, the blood flow, everything like that, how that all works. And the other thing as well, that's important in learning correct techniques is to protect yourself, longevity in your career. Because if you're doing the same thing over and over and over again, you run the risk of getting repetitive strain injury, you often get bored during the same thing, because I have people you know, come to me to me to learn different techniques because they are bored with doing the same things. So there's lots of different reasons. You know, why? Why we need to do this. But if you think that, you know, if we're doing like a Swedish massage, we're using our hands the same way but then if we go Looks like a fingertip type of massage. We're not putting that same strain on our hands all the time. So it's good for us. And having correct posture, as well is extremely important. So

Shannon O'Brien  10:14

I just set up straight for those of you that are listening and not seeing my posture. That's right.

10:19

Yeah, you know, we ended up needing treatments at the end of the day if we're not taking care of ourselves correctly.

Shannon O'Brien  10:25

So, oh, let's do a class on that gainer. Let's do that next. Okay, a class on how because I know that when my personal trainer works with me, my shoulders are all pulled forward. And I need to learn how to open them up and do some some stretches and some massage techniques to help my shoulder. So let's talk about posture in one of let's do a masterclass on it. Okay. Oh, I love it. Okay, so I really agree with you, I really think that it's one thing to take what you learned in school, you know, six times rolling over the foreheads tapotement, you know, that the baby, baby, baby, baby baby basics. You can't keep doing that over and over and over and over again, your clients will be bored, you'll be bored. Like you said, you'll get repetitive injuries. And we want to avoid all that show. So I love that you are helping us understand what the proper techniques are. So that we don't do it wrong and cause more problems for our clients. And we say that we Sugaring all the time, like please just learn the proper techniques. And now with platforms like this and your website, enhanced touch.com You'll we're able to spread the word even better. So there's no reason why you shouldn't have just a plethora of information at your fingertips, pun intended. So what I want to do is take this a step further. And the reason why I brought you on The Sugar Show, besides the fact that you're fabulous, and I love your techniques as far as it relates to my facials. I know that a lot of clients come in, and they're jittery. And they're jumping, which causes problems when we're trying to sugar them. Because if they have anxiety, or they're or they're jumpy or stressed, or whatever it is, they're clamping their legs together or they're flinching when you do their brows. Even if it doesn't hurt, you just can't relax. So give us a couple little tips and tricks on when a client walks in the room. And they're just resonating. They're vibrating at this really high kind of shaky level. What are just a couple little things like words of wisdom. And then we're actually going to do a class in the sugar tribe about some specific techniques that you can use above and beyond this. So that's exciting for sugar pros. But give us a couple little ideas of what we can do to just kind of set the mood

12:54

so to speak. Absolutely. Well, most techniques with massage really begins with the breath. So simply having the client take some deep breaths before any treatment starts is going to be key. Because when you slow down the breath, you slow down the nervous system. Because you know, you can't be relaxed and stressed at the same time. You know, you can't we know that when we're stressed. breathing becomes shallower, faster, our heart rate increases. And so we want to sedate the client and reduce that anxiety and just having them just instructing them to you know, even just placing your hands on their shoulders and say, Okay, now I'd like you to take a slow, deep breath in as slowly as you possibly can. And slowly breathe out. And you will see just after like three breaths, they've already started to decompress. Yeah, adding in even an essential oil in that hip inhalation process, just a drop of lavender. That's all it needs, you know, either on a tissue on the chest or a drop in your hand, cut over the nose, not too close, and in case they're claustrophobic. And again, that will really help them to relax. Now the other great, easy to do movements, the temples, I mean, we all love the temple frictions and just as they breathe in, just slowly have them. You know what we would do this for them but slowly rotating and just that slow movement is going to again, calm them down because As I think it's so important that we forget that association of our touch, and the amazing effects it can have on the client's well being, and on this ultimately on their skin as well. So whether you're doing ms Sugaring treatment, or whether you're doing a facial treatment, massage can be incorporated into anything, you know, it's just having the different options, whether it's a scalp massage, and I massage, you know, an upper body massage, destroying the shoulders around the neck, anyway, you know, because it doesn't have to be necessarily related to the area that's been sugared, for example, you know, so and it's, there's so many techniques that we can do in a short space of time, just to really decompress the client.

Shannon O'Brien  15:56

So if you think about it, sugar professionals, if you use some of these techniques on yourself in between clients, and you get yourself to a place where you slow your breathing down, maybe you've had a client that really got you riled up or you know, you, you don't know how to text the got you spun up, or you're running late, you know, to work or something. If you can use those little moments, a little bit of essential oil, rub your own temples have a minute, then when your client comes in, and they're resonating at this high place, and they're jumpy and jittery. They come to you and you already have notice, even my voice is starting to Yeah, just kind of have a you know, a little more calming effect. Imagine if that was you. And you come in, and you've got a stressful day, and the kids are making you crazy, or your job is nuts, er, and you are you are late, and you just sprinted in at the last second. And you walk in the room, and Gaynor is standing there. And she says, Hello, Shannon. I mean, and she just puts her hands on you. And it just it just gives you that like permission to just leave it outside. Absolutely. And I think that we need to do a better job as practitioners to not keep the vibration up high. But give them a safe place, give your clients a safe place, with your voice with your touch, touching their temples, having amazing essential oil in the room. Just taking it down a notch because everyone is running so fast, which in turn causes that nervous central nervous system to just you know, people are bound up tight these days.

17:43

Absolutely. I mean, there's there's nobody, I mean very few people that we know of that, you know, don't experience stress on a daily basis. And so with, you know, simple massage techniques, we know that the primary purpose is to achieve relaxation, improve the well being of the client released those feel good hormones, oxytocin, the beta, endorphins, serotonin, dopamine, they are known as scientific studies and facts that they are released through skilled touch. And then if we think of that, then yeah, the clients gonna feel great. But the other thing that we also forget is, when we have that constant stress response in our body, one of the hormones I'm sure everybody's heard of it, cortisone is supposed to be an anti inflammatory hormone. But what happens is when we experience this long term stress, as cells become resistant to that hormone, so instead of it having an anti inflammatory effect, and body's in a constant, inflamed state, and we know that most of the skin problems that we see whether it's premature aging, stress, acne, rosacea, or even certain types of hyperpigmentation, all have their roots in that low level underlying inflammation. And so that's why incorporating touch into our treatments is so beneficial. And like you said, Shannon, you know, you're going to benefit as well. And I loved what you said about decompressing at the beginning because I do that between my clients, you know, and I also instruct you know, my students, my learners to just when you have done a treatment, you know, we need to leave that energy behind them and just consciously relax yourself, relax your muscles before you're ready to go on to your next client.

Shannon O'Brien  19:55

Yes, for sure. You know, gainer. I'm sitting listening to you When I'm thinking about inflammation, not that you remind me of inflammation, but but I'm thinking about, you know, my, my clients that come in, and when they when they do have that kind of inflamed stressed, just ball about them, you know, I've noticed that they actually tend to react differently to not only the treatment, which is huge for sugar because we are taking hair out of the body. So there is a little bit of pain associated. Yeah, but there is less pain when those nerve endings are not fried. Right? Yeah. And there is less inflammatory response besides pain, where maybe they'll have a histamine reaction, maybe they'll have, you know, where they're just break out later, because they're constantly in a state of stress. How long does it take someone to kind of decompress? Obviously, everyone's different, like they lay on your table? How long do you think you need to put toward a client just to kind of initiate that?

21:12

You know, that's a really good question. And like you said, it does vary from person to person. But, I mean, you could achieve that in as little as a minute. I mean, I would say, you know, the longer the better. Course, Time is of essence, but with, you know, encouraging them to with the breathing breath is everything, just encouraging them to breathe. And then with just a few massage movements, you could have a client really relaxed, you know, I would say, maximum three minutes, and they will be you know, yeah, totally.

Shannon O'Brien  21:51

Think about this, you have clients are coming in, in an inflamed state. And you're performing a Sugaring service, say, I know, a lot of estheticians that do facials are on there, too. And maybe you're doing appeal, maybe you're doing Dermaplaning, whatever it is, if you can just take if it's a 15 minute brow appointment, say, Well, why don't we take a minute, yeah, and give that gift to our clients. And be very conscious for them and bring that inflammatory response down, and then begin the brow service. Lip service. What I see huge results when I just slow it down, and sugar is very much about the slower, the better, the better results you're gonna get. So with wax, we're speak their speed waxing, right, which sugar slower we go and we allow that sugar to seep down and wrap around the hair follicle. Well, if those hair follicles are bound, and they're tight, and they're, they're inflamed, and they're mad, and they're just as stressed as the rest of their body, it's going to be harder to get that hair out. Just take 45 seconds to a minute. To get the clients to just have a moment, all of their nerve endings will start to just relax. Which is why we don't talk politics. We don't talk stressful topics. We don't talk anything controversial. Because we want the body to relax so that the hair extracts better. Awesome, right? And so we won't have an inflammation response. We won't have just that, that bound up response from the shoulders to cut hair follicles who would have thunk? And I absolutely every single time my clients tell me, I don't get it. I'm breaking out in ingrown hairs. You know, I'm having these reactions on my eyebrows. I'm like, Huh? You stressed right now. And they always say, oh, yeah, I'm selling my house. Oh, gosh, my kids are graduating or whatever it is. And if you just listen to them, and give them a minute of these techniques, I promise you, the service will go faster, even though it feels slower to take a minute out to do these massage techniques. But the service overall will actually take you the same if not less time overall. You'll be relaxed. It'll be easier for you to sugar your clients. And your client can walk out with an experience. And I that's what I think we're forgetting when we're doing these speed classes. And what we're need to remember is if we just slow down for a minute, your clients will remember that they will remember your touch on the temple.

24:47

Absolutely because you know everything is fast, fast, fast, as quickly as we possibly can. And people can only go on at that pace for so long. Aren't, they will burn out, we know that stress is the root of so many illnesses, and so many health conditions that and giving clients that permission, we had a client the other day, and she never had a massage any type of massage before. And she, she just couldn't believe it. And she was 61 years old. And never no never had it. She was so adorable. And she's like, oh, it just feels so luxurious. And I'm like, enjoy it, I suppose. Because you deserve this. You know, you deserve to give yourself a break some time to yourself. And I always think that as well, you know, I'm like, you know, it must be when I get a massage I am so or a facial or any relaxing kind of service, I'm not so excited of the morning. And so, you know, it's always good to be so present for our clients stay mindful, and give them the best service that they they deserve. Because, you know, they they have a choice to go anywhere they want to. And so they certainly can. And we need to make it the best experience as you said.

Shannon O'Brien  26:18

Great point. You know, one of the things that you and I talked about before the show was the fact that this is really a great introduction. So say someone Sugaring an eyebrow, right? They come in for a sugared brow service service, and you give them your touch, it's 45 minutes of good intention of just taking away the cares of the world. And it's just for a lip sugar, or it's just for a brow sugar that they came in for what a great entree to your touch for your facials. Absolutely. So I will do just a quick temple massage, or I'll just cradle their head in my hands just for a moment and just have them breathe with me. And maybe I have some essential oils on my fingertips and I'll just have them breathe. And their whole body relaxes. And they can imagine for a moment when and I'll say, can you imagine what an actual facial feels like with me?

27:16

Yeah, booked. Yeah.

Shannon O'Brien  27:18

If you tell him

27:19

what a minute, imagine, yeah, imagine 60 minutes of it, or 30 minutes or however long your treatment is

Shannon O'Brien  27:27

right. Use that as an opportunity for a great introduction to the other services that you provide. So if you're an esthetician that only does facial Sugaring, that's fine. This is beautiful. You do a little face sugar, you introduce them. Maybe you even offer that as a promotion. You know, if you're if you're getting your bikini, I'm going to do a sugar brow on you today. And when they come in, use that as an opportunity to introduce your touch. Yeah. And then don't give discounts anymore. Use that extra few minutes of aromatherapy. Yeah, right.

28:03

Yeah, absolutely. I mean, even offering, like you said as a promotion, a complimentary five minute massage, you know, during the month of March. And then you know, they're really get even more from it. So adding value rather than discounted?

Shannon O'Brien  28:22

Absolutely. Yes. And then giving him an introduction to your touch. Because if you're only giving them Brazilians all the time, they don't know what great hands you have. Yeah. And what a great intro. So at the end of the service, you could say, You know what, your you really responded to even just me, you know, massaging your temples or the back of your neck. I really feel like you need a facial. Can we book that for you? And it just feels less salesy. Yeah, it feels it feels more like it's something you need, instead of this thing you you know, kind of want to get or you got to check it off your list, Oh, I gotta go get a facial like, they're not going to write it out of their budget, they're not going to say no, think about it. They're going to be in the moment and say, You know what, I really do deserve that. Yeah, you have booked yourself a facial in addition to a sugar service. And I'm just trying to build your books. Think about offering ways for people to feel your touch. Yeah, I love that.

29:20

Yeah. And following us on that as well. I find that you know, people have great intentions, and they they love the service and oh, yeah, yeah, I will come back. But again, people are so busy. And I'm like it, you know, obviously it's not gonna work for every single client. But I often say while while you're here now, why don't we book your next treatment? And then if you get too busy, you can always cancel but it's in there then. So you're not put you're not forgetting about yourself. And you remember what a great experience it is. You know, because especially after the sun have a stake there? enjoyed it so much? That's a prime time. It's no, you know, I've worked with enough people and they're like, Okay, well, then. Okay, I hope to see you again. Well, you know, you're probably not going to see them again. So.

Shannon O'Brien  30:16

Yeah, because I would venture to guess that, you know, this whole thing was social media, and, you know, getting that, you know, referral and the word of mouth. If I'm at a party, and someone says to me, oh, yeah, I got triggered. People say, Oh, that's cool. What's that? And they'll talk about it, right. But I guarantee you when someone says, oh, you know, I got sugared from this beautiful woman named gainer. And oh, she massaged my neck. And she just did a little like to wrap my head. And it was great. And it was just a brown sugar. It was fabulous. So I got a facial and it was something else, it becomes this thing that you talk about. And it's an experience, instead of just a thing, you check off your to do list, right. And that's what I think we need to work on, folks is bringing things into your clientele. And I said, this is what 2020 is all about is. Okay. So for those of you who have already brought in Sugaring, and you know how great it is and how much better it is than the waxing experience. Now it's time to take our skills to the next level, right? So it's about really taking your techniques and your advice, and adding them on. And I think what's key is not going back to just pressing on temples and you know, rubbing ahead, but really learning proper techniques and Gainer you have so many classes that you offer. And we'll we'll talk about those in the show notes. But really taking a hands on class or even one of your online classes. So that you can see a couple of little different techniques, for example, pulling on ear lobes. Talk about what that does for your clients.

31:59

Absolutely. Yeah.

Shannon O'Brien  32:01

Right. And and yeah, I mean, even just even just massaging the ear lobes for just a moment, what is it about the ears?

32:10

Amazing. Because we have so many, you know, we have obviously we have nerve endings all over the body. That's how we feel, you know, that's part of our sense of touch. But I'm not sure if you've heard this before, but the air is like an upside down fetus embryo. Really. Yeah. And so this part is like the head. So she's pulling

Shannon O'Brien  32:35

on her ear lobe, for those of you that are just listening.

32:39

So like, this is your spine. And so and this is your head, and you know, the nerve, we know that the obviously the nervous system is connected with the is the brain and the central nervous system. And so acupuncturists use the ears a lot to also access different parts of the body. And so it does feel amazing. So it's kind of like having a scalp massage, or even just rubbing gently on somebody's ears. And you know, you don't have to take the earrings away, the earrings can stay there, just some gentle rubbing of the ear lobes. One thing I would say, Be careful off. And that's like making too much rustling noises, because that can be disturbing. Because they know Oh, what's that noise?

Shannon O'Brien  33:27

Even just holding on their head and just, you know, kind of a little pressure on the ear lobes. Oh, I didn't know it was the fetus. That's pretty interesting. But it makes sense. Like, it's just a very, you know, it's just a very tender receiving area that we never realized, you know, was so important. So I it's really important for you all to make sure that you do take 30 seconds to a minute with each client, even if you see them every single month like we do as Sugaring people, and you know, try something new each time on that. They will happily say okay, yeah, and they will happily be like, Oh, is she going to touch my temples today? Is she gonna pull my ears today? Like what's she doing today? This is great, right? And they love to be guinea pigs for any type of relaxing treatment. I know that even just laying on a table is delightful for these folks to really, really take the time to learn properly. So, enter talk to us about where we can find you and how can we get a handle on some more classes with you?

34:31

Okay, so currently, the hands on classes that in person classes that I teach are held in Burlingame, Alexander's esthetics. That's California,

Shannon O'Brien  34:46

my hometown, by the way.

No, thank you. It's it's been an honor and a pleasure to be able to speak to you all. And I just want everybody to remember that seriously the power that you have in these hands. And it doesn't matter where you are. It doesn't matter what products you work with what equipment you have, once you've learned a hands on skill, it will stay with you for the rest of your life. So investing in your own skills, because we know things come in and out of fashion. Oh, this is the latest ingredient. This is the latest device to use. But don't underestimate the value of our habits and the power of our touch.
